I AGREE with Bill Bartle on his stance regarding Northern Ireland (HAS, Sept 24).
I visited a couple of years ago to see where my paternal relatives came from, which was a short ride out of Belfast in a place called Comber, famous for being the birthplace of Thomas Andrews, the designer of the ill-fated Titanic and also the best potatoes in the world – so I’m led to believe.
While talking to taxi drivers and locals alike, it was clear there is still this religious divide but the majority of the violence is crime and drug related.
Belfast is a city full of amazing history but away from the relatively safe facade of its centre and visitor attractions you soon feel uncomfortable.
We visited the Titanic Museum which was good, but parts of it rather fake. Crumlin Road Gaol is a must as are the murals depicting the pain and suffering suffered during the Troubles.
Yes, we enjoyed our time in Belfast but unlike Dublin where relaxation, drink and be merry are the key words, I just couldn’t relax in the same way.
The big open topped bus is a must, just be selective which stops you get off at, and mind your Ps and Qs.
John Cumberland, Rushyford.
