DURHAM UNIVERSITY is now the second worst in the country for social inclusion, although that was not mentioned in your article headlined “Top of the class as university has two reasons to celebrate” (Echo, Sept 22). I wonder why?

When the current national picture shows record numbers of first year students coming from areas of disadvantage (22.5 per cent), Durham’s proportion has dropped to only 5.4 per cent, just ahead of Cambridge.

Vice Chancellor, Stuart Corbridge, said: “We are doing more than ever before to attract students from all backgrounds to consider Durham.”

Clearly, this is still not enough.
