FURTHER to “Redcar steelworks to be demolished” (Echo, Aug 14).

Whilst the Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen is correct, the bus tours planned in October will be bittersweet for some who go along.

However many steelworkers will remember the SSI steel closure announcement back in September 2015. This was a travesty for people in the Teesside area, as they later saw that the Scunthorpe and Port Talbot steelmaking plants weathered those steel storms.

The bitterness would be that many politicians didn’t fight as strongly for the Redcar steelmaking plants as others did for Scunthorpe and Port Talbot.

If there is a forthcoming Electric Arc Furnace steelmaking plant that would lessen the blow of losing 2,000 jobs back in 2015.

The Covid-19 pandemic has wiped out many jobs, especially up here in the North-East. Therefore a further substantial regeneration of the redundant SSI steel plant, as has been outlined, is required.

Young people in the region need hope in these dire economic times, hence political rhetoric on “levelling up” should not be hollow words.
