AMERICA is my favourite destination in the whole wide world.

When I needed to get away to relieve the stress brought on by pressure at work, the US beckoned and, whoosh, it’s just a plane ride away. Hello, Mr Avis, country music turned up loud and drive and drive and drive - awesome.

Many thousands of miles I have travelled across this great land meeting some of the most wonderful people you ever wish to meet.

Yes, I thought, this is to be the land of the free, along with Nashville, Texas, LA, Iowa etc.

I have visited Martin Luther King’s grave in Atlanta and Montgomery, Alabama, where Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus at the tender age of 15 to a white man, helping to fuel and initiate the civil rights movement in 1955.

I have never experienced any race related issue although I haven’t ventured into any ‘no go’ areas, as you wouldn’t here.

We have always had a special relationship with the US. This, I feel, was a contributing factor when Nissan decided to build the Renault here instead of Spain considering our strong if sometimes strained relations with this massive consumer.

But, I fear Trump could be America’s downfall. From being an arrogant but hugely successful businessman who rightly, if controversially, helped the country’s economy bloom, he has turned into this unrecognisable tyrant.

In fact, I would say he’s verging on a dictator-like creature who appears to listen to no one.

America could be heading into civil war instead of dealing with civil rights. I’m sorry, Mr President, but you’re playing your Trump card like a joker: you need to reshuffle the pack and get back into the game - it’s your deal.

John Cumberland, Rushyford.
