WE are now half way through the meteorological winter. And as often happens, we are in the grip of a massive anti-cyclone which means cold, dry weather with little or no wind.

Demand for electricity peaks at this time of year so it is interesting to see where it is being produced.

As I write nearly 80 per cent is generated from gas, nuclear and coal. The rest is a mix of various sources with “renewables” adding up to 15 per cent, half of which ludicrously includes the burning of biomass at Drax.

With the hysteria over climate change now at epic proportions leading to the eventual closure of those reliable, low cost gas, nuclear and coal stations I have to query where our power will come from in future at times like this when there is no wind or sun.
