TWO cheers for John Gilmore’s Bishop bashing letter (HAS, Jan 22).

It would have been three cheers but I take issue with his claim that “Historically Bishop Auckland was never particularly a mining town”.

The most miner-friendly Bishop of Durham was I believe David Jenkins and I doubt that he ever shopped in Bishop with his Doggarts’ clubs and Co-op “store divi”.

I never saw him in the queue outside the Odeon or standing freezing waiting for a bus in the marketplace.

Now there are no miners, there is no Doggarts’, no Co-op and no pictures.

I rest my case.
