THIS Government has stated a commitment to creative thinking in regard to the regions, including potentially relocating the House of Lords to a site near York railway station.
York is a great historic city and an ideal location.
I note, though, that the leader of the North Yorkshire County Council points out that “Leeds Bradford Airport isn’t far away”. True, but a pretty unpleasant drive on already congested roads, with more pollution due to the use of private transport to make the trip.
Half an hour up the East Coast mainline is a link to the line that passes Teesside International Airport, which already has a grossly underused station.
If some effort was put into the plan, I am sure that a quick link between York and our airport could be established.
The station would need a facelift, a shuttle to the terminal would be have to be instituted and some halfway decent rolling stock would be needed, but should this be insurmountable?
The provision of a good service would open up the airport to a much wider population and provide a significant boost to its regeneration. It would be “greener” too. We live in hope, but not expectation!
