THE picture of the two students (whom I recognised!) outside the administrative block of Middleton St George College of Education in Saturday’s Memories (Echo, Jan 18) brought back my memories. The college opened in September 1968 and closed in August 1979. (Not 1973!)
Incidentally Darlington College of Education closed the year before.
So nearly all of the students who attended both colleges are now retired.
The changes that have occurred in teaching since then are huge.
However, the hopes and aspirations of the pupils are still largely the same.
Good luck to all the new entrants into the profession and I hope you that can look back on your achievements, with fondness, in 2065.
John Watts, Darlington.
