MIKE Taylor (HAS November 9) makes some good points regarding Brexit, but voting in a general election is invariably different from a referendum as important as Brexit is, the general election on December 12 is about much, much more.

I believe we need a Labour government to build a fairer society, end poverty and put more money into the NHS, police and other vital services.

Any party that is totally a “leave” or “remain” party, whether Tory, LibDem or Brexit, cannot unite our divided country. Labour is the only major party offering everyone a choice. It’s not just whether or not to leave, it’s on what terms.

Labour will offer leavers the best terms available, far better than Theresa May’s or the even worse deal from Boris Johnson. Labour members and MPs will then be free to campaign either to leave or remain.

Regardless of opinion polls, nobody can be sure whether or not there is still a majority for Brexit. The only way to resolve that is to have a people’s vote on the final deal. Like the true statesman he is, Jeremy Corbyn is looking to the long-term interests of the country. He will resolve Brexit in six months and immediately implement the result of a people’s vote, either way. Boris will take 12 months.
