FURTHER to the front page story headlined “Embattled PCC will stand down” (Echo, Oct 1).
On balance, the decision by Labour’s Cleveland Police and Crime Commissioner Barry Coppinger to step down at the next election, seems to be the correct decision.
One may recall when another Labour Police and Crime Commissioner recently stood down in the Northumbria Police Force, there was a bit of an outcry when Vera Baird moved on to the newly created Victim Support job so close to next May’s Police and Crime Commissioners’ elections.
This by-election went ahead with the cost calculated at around £2m.
With the several months left before Barry Coppinger stands down, this should give some time for a clean break and some breathing space for the new Chief Constable Richard Lewis to restructure the top team and make Cleveland safer.
