I AGREE with H MacKenley’s recent comments ‘Discipline’ (HAS, Aug 16).

Once good behaviour was rewarded and bad punished to teach that our actions have positive or negative consequences.

We are responsible for our own actions, failings and mistakes. But personal responsibility has been replaced by a culture of excuses and blame.

Lack of positive role models means far too many get their morals and values from the worst sort.

These include Rap, Grime and Drill artists whose glorification of violence, drugs, gangs, crime and the denigration of females has led many into drugs, gangs, violence, crime and becoming absentee fathers.

They also include self-serving politicians and social activists who promote a victim mentality, whilst trying to raise one section of the population up by pulling down another which only widens social divisions.

Negative messages and role models cause many to think they’ve no future and no chance of something better.

Investment in jobs, training opportunities and youth centres are part of the solution.

But we need a return to discipline, personal responsibility, family values, parents and public figures who can be positive role models.
