THERE is a distinct possibility that the new Conservative Party leader will come from within the current Cabinet, which under normal circumstances would seem to be an appropriate decision.
Because of Brexit and the deep divisions concerning the various positions of the Cabinet contenders the chance of a consensus is quite remote.
It may well be that an MP from the backbenches will be persuaded to stand as a candidate and not being part of the Cabinet could make the voting quite interesting.
As the final decision is made by the party members, it gives them a chance to select a leader not just for Brexit but for life thereafter.
It looks like Mrs May will be leaving under controversial circumstances not as she could have envisaged when first elected.
Mr D Wearmouth, Shildon
