DURING most of 2018 and 2019, just ending a couple of weeks ago, roadworks were evident on the A1(M) junctions 59 and 60 between Bradbury and Aycliffe, both northbound and southbound, and indeed a 50mph limit was in force during this period.

I thought all the work involved was to do with widening the carriageways but it appears the work was to do with the barriers.

Between these two junctions there are now three types of barriers. The usual girder type, then a section involving steel rope and now a three-mile stretch of solid concrete about four feet in height – the one I suspect that involved all the upheaval (and expense, no doubt).

Does anyone know what actually went on during those long months or is this section of the motorway being used as an experiment in the efficiency of the different types of barrier I wonder?
