I COULD not agree less with Cllr Stephen Harker’s statement regarding the Brexit effect on our local election (Echo, May 4).

The Labour administration should look at its own performance over the last few years i.e. not listening to the residents regarding the library, the wasted money on the court case, the money lost on the building of the “throughabout,” which has turned out to be a disaster and is to be rebuilt as a roundabout, the High Row so-called improvement, the closure of the town centre public toilets, the disgusting state of the town centre pedestrian areas (chewing gum etc). The list goes on, and includes the cost to the town of former chief executive Ada Burns.

I certainly never gave Brexit a thought, but considered Darlington and its future when I placed my crosses.

As a resident of Haughton ward, I do hope that Cllr Nick Wallis pays close attention to his minute majority and starts to treat his constituents with the courtesy they deserve, when they voice their disapproval of his cost cutting ideas, such as paying off the street cleaners and having a public litter pick to keep our town tidy.

Nice try to keep the town tidy for free, but it has not been a success.

On the contrary, the town is still a disgrace, even with the current army of grass cutters and council litter pickers (a poor try at vote catching).

I hope the Conservatives will remember the referendum result and learn to work with the minority councillors who were elected with them.
