I SEE Durham’s Chief Constable Mike Barton is retiring shortly, no doubt this will be followed by a knighthood or gong later in the year.
I ask myself, however, what do these people actually do?
Sat in their ivory towers, their every need catered for and a host of lesser ranks running around after them, attending meetings, seminars, presenting awards, cutting tape with scissors, visiting schools, top notch luncheons with local bigwigs, and chauffeured everywhere they go.
Alas the usual story.
It’s a pity they don’t get out on the front line at least some time every day instead of taking the credit for the work done by our rank and file bobbies.
The saying that there are “more chiefs than Indians” springs to mind for some reason.
