SO we are to have another Article 50 extension until October 31.

With the EU adamant that no changes to the Irish “backstop” are possible, it is quite evident that the current Withdrawal Agreement cannot pass through Parliament.

Moreover, the alternatives of a no deal Brexit, or any of the “soft” Brexit possibilities which have been proposed, also appear to lack the necessary Parliamentary majority.

If we are ever to find a national consensus, in my opinion we will have to hold a second referendum, but I can’t see that passing through our current Parliament either.

Thus we now face complete deadlock, and it would be pointless as things stand to waste any more time over it. Hence I think that Theresa May must resign, the Conservatives elect a new leader, and then for us to have a general election.

I don’t particularly like this option, as issues other than Brexit may well influence how people vote. Moreover, there is no guarantee it will produce a Government with an outright Parliamentary majority, and we would be back where we are at the moment (although perhaps Parliament might then realise that a people’s vote is the only practical way to resolve the dilemma?).

Nevertheless, it is the only way I can see which might break the current impasse.
