PHILIP BROUGHTON (HAS, Apr 6) wishes we were a “free, independent nation again” and that we had obtained a no-deal Brexit on March 29. He clearly thinks this was a realistic prospect.
Sorry to disillusion him, but it was not. It might have been if we were the Britain of 50 years ago, when we had a strong economy, which is manifestly no longer the case.
We should never have let our economy decline, but we did and now the damage is done we have to live with the consequences.
Were it otherwise, do you think we would have tolerated the disgusting – yes, disgusting – spectacle of our unfortunate Prime Minister, poor woman, having to run backwards and forwards to grovel, on our behalf, to arrogant Eurocrats?
One thing I share with Philip Broughton is an increasing contempt for our political class – except the Prime Minister – as exemplified by their recent disgraceful antics in Parliament.
