ANDREW DAWSON (HAS, Apr 9) is quite right to point out the merits of the preferential voting system.
I believe this should be used for a people’s vote, with voters given the choice of the Government’s EU deal, no deal, or remain.
I would also include something like Labour’s proposed “soft” Brexit, so those who favour leaving the EU with a deal have an alternative to the Government’s “hard” Brexit. I know this hasn’t been negotiated with the EU, but since it would leave us closer to the EU, I don’t believe it would present major difficulties (and it might solve the Irish backstop problem).
Such a referendum would show what people were prepared to accept, rather than what they would ideally like.
If the result of this referendum were made legally binding, it would clear the current log-jam in Parliament.
