MORE power to the elbows of the members of the group "love darlo trees" (Echo, Mar 20).

Developers are increasingly using the tactic of netting as a way round environmental planning restrictions.

They net trees and hedgerows in early spring and can then argue that no birds or mammals are nesting, roosting, or feeding in the area, and they then get the nod from local planning officials to fell trees and grub out hedgerows – the bulldozers move in before residents are aware and their concerns are swept aside because "we have complied with the law".

The wildlife casualties, as found at West Park in Darlington, are regarded as collateral damage.

All in the name of the great gods concrete and profit!
