THE redevelopment alongside Durham’s Framwellgate Bridge looks at long last to be nearing completion and, while it’s early days yet, I have to say that the results look none too promising.

In fact they look about as obtrusive, environmentally insensitive and downright hideous as the previous monstrosities on that site.

What is it with modern architects that they can’t make a half decent job of something that should have been relatively simple and straightforward (even if ridiculously extravagant and unnecessary)?

Going past there today on the bus I thought if that’s the best they can come up with after years of disruption, mess and inconvenience, then they should jack architecture in and get themselves a real job.

Personally speaking, I think I could have made a better job of it myself. At any rate I doubt if it could have made it worse.
