I WAS interested to read that new tenants have been announced for Durham`s Riverside Walk, which was previously The Gates shopping centre (Echo, Feb 21). I was under the impression that the new development was in part to replace the shopping centre.
However, the statement from Clearbell Capital states that restaurants, cafes and bars, as well as the cinema and bowling alley, will be opening there. I notice that there is no mention of any shops being located there.
The only shops which are there currently were there before the renovations started.
It appears that this site is now trying to rival Walkergate.
No wonder no one comes into Durham anymore. Heaven knows what tourists think when they come to the city.
I would suggest that members of Durham council take a trip to York to see how a successful city operates.
