WORK and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd’s decision to admit Universal Credit is the main cause behind the surge in the use of food banks sounds like a Government in retreat.

A general election could be called any time now. This sudden admission is not the best advert for a party who have trumpeted how tremendous this reform is.

The truth is Universal Credit has been almost ten years in the making and has progressed as far as an asthmatic ant.

It’s been an expensive failure. A reform that has ruined lives, stolen millions of pounds in working tax credits, created poverty, deducted cash from every disability benefit known and most importantly does not work.

We know the Conservatives hate to be proved wrong, but with Universal Credit it’s finally time to bite the bullet.
