FURTHER to the article headlined “Council leader shows support for airport plan” (Echo, Jan 19). Like Brexit, the day of reckoning for Durham Tees Valley Airport is coming down the tracks.

This airport vote needs all five council leaders to vote in favour of the Tees Valley Tory mayor’s total regeneration plan which includes bringing the airport under public ownership. The vote on Thursday could well be a watershed for the greater Tees area.

We have heard from two concerned Labour leaders, one is still undecided and another would like the mayor’s plan split up so they can have a separate vote on the steel land plan and the airport plan.

One could think the reason for that type of voting could see a scenario where the steel land plan gets full support and the airport doesn’t. Many will hope that the Tees Valley Combined Authority cabinet will take a lead from Darlington and Hartlepool leaders who will be supporting the mayor’s plan, although the Darlington leader Stephen Harker says there is a risk, but the benefits outweigh the risks and wishes the airport success.

Many will echo Cllr Stephen Harker’s good wishes for a successful local airport.
