AN EXCELLENT article featured seven northern MPs calling for a People’s Vote (Echo, Nov 23). I think several points need to be emphasised.

Firstly, people who call for a People’s Vote are not contemptuous of democracy. It is actually this Government which is contemptuous of the North-East. Brexit will damage this region, particularly the less well-off who Labour represents. We receive considerable aid from the EU. I would not trust this Government to match it.

We would all like an election to get rid of this Government. But the likelihood of it happening is remote. We have the Parliament Act, and as the article points out the Tories will not vote to lose their jobs. The only way out and to protect the North- East is to have a People’s Vote. All power to their elbows.
