I AM very sad to report a severe shortage of hospital beds in Darlington Memorial Hospital.

I know this because a friend of mine came off his bike on Tuesday morning and received a very severe blow to the head. Luckily two nurses were present in the traffic jam his accident caused and they were able to treat him for an hour whilst he awaited the arrival of paramedics.

He was taken to Darlington Memorial where he was discharged from A&E and the hospital at midnight because they were minus 70 beds. They needed 70 beds already for patients and they didn’t have any.

Why therefore are wards being closed at Bishop Auckland, may I ask, when there is such a chronic shortage of beds nine miles away in Darlington?
