NEWS about the Parliamentary proposal to bring forward of the planned ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel powered cars to 2032 (Echo, Oct 19) does not mention the possibility of a more practicable and affordable carbon-less alternative to electric and fuel cell powered cars.
This is the ammonia fuelled combustion engine.
Ammonia is cheap and easy to synthesize using hydrogen produced by electrolysis of acidified water using sustainably generated electricity.
Its combustion produces only water and nitrogen without any particulates. It readily liquefies and could be used like LPG.
Unlike LPG it is not very explosive and any leakage would be quickly apparent because of its pungent smell.
Although a irritant, its toxicity is very limited, probably less so than petrol vapour.
