ACCORDING to a survey by the Office for National Statistics, Redcar & Cleveland is the happiest place in the North-East.

Here are my ten reasons why our borough tops the happiness league:

1. More space to live and breathe in beautiful countryside, further enhanced by voluntary community groups.

2. Small towns and villages, giving us a sense of identity and belonging.

3. Friendly people who don’t ignore you in the street and who make good neighbours.

4. The seaside, especially Saltburn, along with miles of golden sands.

5. Roseberry Topping, the North York Moors and Eston Hills.

6. Good schools, especially at primary level.

7. Supportive communities as we get older.

8. Our rich and diverse Yorkshire heritage, especially at Kirkleatham, Guisborough, Saltburn and Skinningrove.

9. Improving job opportunities.

10. Lastly, and as deputy mayor I’d better not omit it: Redcar & Cleveland Council!
