EDUCATION Secretary Damian Hinds is very concerned that children starting school are not able to communicate in full sentences or able to read simple words blaming the lack of early year teachers (Echo, Aug 16).

At no point in the article is mentioned the responsibility of the legal guardian(s) to assist children in learning these skills.

What I do see are a lot of children being escorted to school by a guardian with their hand up to their ear talking into a mobile phone.

Perhaps more conversation with the child would assist the child’s learning.

If at home the child is normally sat in front of a television or computer screen why not turn the machine off and read a simple story to them introducing them to the words.

Even the charity making the complaint does not mention the responsibility of the child’s guardian(s).

The state should not be expected to do everything.
