RECYCLING sites available across a North-East borough will be reduced from 17 to seven under council cuts.

Ten sites, known as "bring sites" will be removed following an in-depth scrutiny review by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Place Select Committee.

Bring sites are designated recycling areas in car parks and on streets. The materials accepted include paper, glass, cans, cardboard, plastic bottles and textiles.

Under the review, the Cowpen Bewley Woodland Park, Wynyard Woodland Park and The Smiths Arms in Carlton Village sites will cease operation on March 19.

Thornaby Sports and Social and Glebe Shops will be closed from March 20 and the Oakwood Centre, Harper Parade, and Portrack Lane Hotel sites shut on March 26.

Elm Tree Shops and Newton Resource Centre will be closed from March 27.

The seven bring sites that will remain open are: Ingleby Barwick Tesco; Stockton Tesco; Eaglescliffe Tesco; Billingham Tesco; Yarm Sainsbury's; Norton Co-op; and Thornaby Town Centre behind Lidl.

Councillor Mike Smith, Stockton Council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "These changes will enable us to retain a good spread of well-used sites around the Borough, while closing sites that aren’t well-used. Keeping seven sites also means we’ll still have far more sites than nearby authorities."
