PROPERTY developers are being sought to work with Redcar and Cleveland Council to help regenerate Eston town centre after a previous agency changed its plans.

The Council has already refurbished the cenotaph and town square, including road improvements and around £780,000 is still available for further development. A High Street Support Scheme for existing town centre businesses is also available.

There had been hopes for an extensive redevelopment of the precinct by a property developer who had purchased an empty former supermarket but the developer has informed the council that is now unlikely to happen.

Councillor Bob Norton, cabinet member for economic growth, said the developer had now decided to seek new tenants or secure a buyer for the unit instead.

He said: “The Council had worked with the developer for some time but they have now made a commercial decision not to take those proposals, which included partial demolition, forward.

"That is a great disappointment but it’s not going to stop our wider plans to regenerate Eston town centre. Those proposals include attracting private sector investment and we hope that any new tenants for that particular building will make a positive impact."
