THE Great North Air Ambulance Service will benefit to the tune of £5,000 thanks to an innovative recycling scheme run by Teesside Crematorium.

Families regularly give consent for the recycling of metals resulting from cremation as part of a scheme which is part of a national programme organised by the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management.

The scheme allows Middlesbrough Council to make charitable donations to local good causes.

The latest to benefit is Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) which received a cheque for £5,000 in a presentation made at the Chapel of Remembrance.

Cllr Denise Rooney, the council's executive member for environment and commercial services, said: “The Service is a life-saving service which is entirely self-financing and we are very happy to help in any small way we can.”

The charity is called to around 1,000 incidents every year.

Grahame Pickering MBE, chief executive of GNAAS, said: "This donation roughly equates to the cost of one mission flown by our team. This means we will be able to respond in someone's time of need."
