A CUSTODY suite is set to be mothballed in a bid to make long-term savings.
Cleveland Police has proposed that its Hartlepool Custody Office should close, as it sees an average of around people use it each day.
The office could close as soon as spring 2019, with Cleveland Police and Crime Commissioner Barry Coppinger agreeing "in principle" to the plans. The proposals allow the site to become operational again if needed.
Assistant Chief Constable Adrian Roberts said: “Regardless of where a person is arrested their welfare is a key concern.
"It’s often not until they are in the cell that their needs are identified, and by taking them to the purpose built facility in Middlesbrough we can ensure that they are able to access any necessary support services at the earliest opportunity.
“We’ve tested the timings for any additional officer journeys and feel that this can be managed appropriately against our demand, whilst providing the best service we can to the public."
