AN ATHLETE has won bronze and silver medals at the Invictus Games.

James Rose, 30, from Marton, Middlesbrough, won a bronze in wheelchair basketball and silver for seated volleyball at the Sydney event.

The Army veteran lost his legs after stepping on an improvised explosive device (IED) in the Helmand province of Afghanistan in November 2009. He needed four years of treatment in rehabilitation and was lucky to survive the blast. The camaraderie of his team has helped him get through being diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder.

Boro fan Malcolm Rose, originally from Teesside and no relation, also competed in athletics and cycling at the Invictus games. The RAF Air Traffic Controller was knocked off his bike during triathlon training and was left paraplegic.
