AN ARMY of volunteers are needed keep the memories of fallen North-East soldiers alive as they mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.
Stockton musician Mike McGrother is organising the Point Me To The Skies Remembrance Day event, with 1,245 ‘sunflowers’ set to adorn a church in the town centre.
In 2014, Stockton residents grew 1,245 sunflowers in memory of the same number of soldiers from the town killed in the Great War.
The ‘sunflowers’ are made entirely from recycled plastic bottles with the installation going on show between 8am and 6.30pm on November 11 in the Holy Trinity Church. Storytelling and songs at the church with backing from the 1,245 Voice Choir will follow at 7pm.
Musician Mr McGrother said: “It’s free and easy to get involved and the finished pieces look stunning, each one representing a life lost as a beautiful and unique art piece.”
Drop-in sunflower making sessions in the Rediscover shop on Stockton High Street run between 1pm and 4pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, up to and including November 8.
