THE number of mourners able to attend cremation services in Middlesbrough has increased to 15.

Since March, the numbers of people allowed to attend services at Teesside Crematorium has been limited to eight.

From yesterday, that limit has increased to 15, in line with national moves to ease the lockdown.

The number of people permitted to attend burials in cemeteries will remain at 15.

Those attending services are reminded to observe guidance around keeping two-metres away from people from other households.

A Middlesbrough Council spokesman said: "It has been essential that we take every possible measure to combat the spread of Coronavirus.

"That has had an inevitable impact on people's ability to gather, most notably at events such as funerals.

"That has been extremely difficult for many people, and we are grateful for their patience and understanding.

"As lockdown measures are gradually eased, we are pleased to be able to increase the number of mourners able to attend services.

"The council will continue to monitor and review these arrangements in line with Government guidance, and further announcements will be made in due course."
