AN MP has been elected chair of a cross-party group looking at hydrogen technology across the UK.

Jacob Young, MP for Redcar, has been elected chair of the Hydrogen All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG).

The group advocates for greater policy support and financial investment in the development of hydrogen technology across the UK.

The Hydrogen APPG was established in 2018, and is one of the largest APPGs, with 28 parliamentarians holding an official role.

Mr Young said: “Hydrogen, across its different uses, has the potential to significantly cut our carbon emissions, create and sustain hundreds of thousands of highly-skilled jobs, such as in Redcar where we already produce 50 per cent of the UK’s hydrogen.

“We already have world-leading hydrogen projects taking place in the UK, covering heating for homes, transport and heavy industry.

"Countries across the globe are watching these initiatives with interest, looking to learn from our experience and import our expertise.

“Being at the forefront of hydrogen technology means we can export our skills and innovation, whilst supporting major steps forward in meeting net-zero targets.

“It’s great that so many of my parliamentary colleagues support this vision and opportunity, and I look forward to working with the businesses, regulators, local authorities, academics, trade bodies and unions across the sector to develop the right policies and investment environment”.
