MORE than 600kg of rubbish was picked up during a beach litter pick.
About 83 per cent of the waste picked up from South Gare, Redcar, was plastic according to those involved in the event, which was organised by RSPB Saltholme, in association with the Marine Conservation Society.
Laura Pringle, visitor experience intern, said “Saturday was the perfect day for a litter pick; the sunshine and dry weather meant perfect conditions. Of the waste we collected, 83 per cent of items were plastic, with the rest being a mixture of metal, sanitary waste and even dog poo.”
More than 70 people helped with the beach clean up, collecting a total of 600kg of waste.
Rubbish was used as part of a citizens science project by the Marine Conservation Society, which aims to identify and record the type and amount of plastic along our coastline to influence environmental policies.
Four litter picks will take place in the Tees Estuary area in coming months, with the next one on Sunday, February 23, at North Gare from 10am.
