A TOWN goes all-out festive tomorrow.

Barnard Castle's free family Christmas festival starts at 4.30pm on Friday, November 29, with seasonal treats and a snow globe in the grounds of Woodleigh.

At 6.15pm a lantern parade down Galgate slip road will be followed by the arrival of Santa before Mayor Sandra Moorhouse switches on the lights on the town tree, donated by Lord Barnard and Raby Estates, at 6.30pm.

Santa will be resident in his grotto in Barnard Castle Methodist Church where there will also be balloon modelling, craft activities and seasonal refreshments on sale.

Artistic pupils at Barnard Castle School will support the event with their handiwork.

Year eight and nine pupils have made lanterns depicting silhouettes of local landmarks for the parade including images of the mechanical swan at The Bowes Museum and High Force.

Around 21 junior boarders from Barnard Castle School will join the parade.

Head of art Kate Baptist said: “It is such a lovely idea to light up the town on the dark days before Christmas and our students have loved being involved in the project.”
