YOUNG musicians had their chance to shine in a national contest which attracts hundreds of vocalists and instrumentalists.

Barnard Castle School hosted a local heat of Rotary’s Young Musician competition on Sunday, November 17. It was adjudicated by Dr Duncan Brown and certificates and cash prizes were awarded in each category.

Oboist Evie Brenkley, of Barnard Castle School, won the instrumental section, and Beth Stenlake, of Teesdale School, won both the vocalist section and picked up the Pat Hartness Memorial Trophy as overall winner. Both now move forward to the regional round.

Rotarian Ian Hodgson said: “We know there are many talented young musicians out there and we encourage them to join us next year in sharing their gift of song or mastery of a musical instrument in Rotary’s Young Musician competition.”
