A PRIEST with a passion for the history of the church in the region will give a talk tonight.

The Reverend John McManners will be the guest speaker at a meeting of Bishop Auckland Civic Society tonight, at 7.30pm.

The meeting will be held at Bishop Auckland Rugby Club, West Mills Playing Fields, Bridge Road, Bishop Auckland, DL14 7PA.

This is a temporary venue for the group as the usual meeting place at Bishop Auckland Town Hall is closed for redevelopment work. It will reopen in 2020 with a new library, cafe, art gallery, shop and refreshed theatre and cinema space.

Rev McManners' particular interest is the Northern Saints, a subject which has been the focus of his study for the past 20 years.

He will address the meeting on The Sacred River and describes the River Wear as a unique artery which joins ten sacred sites in County Durham.

The event is free to members and £2 on the door for visitors.
