THE road that connects a County Durham village to Newton Aycliffe has taken a step towards reopening.

The Middridge road closed back in September to allow for the construction of a roundabout, which will serve a new housing estate and Greenfield Way.

Temporary traffic lights have been operating since then. But they have not always worked, causing traffic delays.

The roundabout is now complete, but the associated street lighting is not.

Consequently, Durham County Council officers could not agree to opening the roundabout on safety grounds and so it remains closed.

Local businesses have been struggling since the road closure and one resident said there have been no buses through the village.

Durham County Councillor John Clare said: “We need the contractor to respond to public exasperation and to open the road as quickly as possible. Everybody is at the end of their patience.”

There is presently no date for the road opening.
