A WATER polo club is encouraging girls to try the sport following national success.

Sedgefield Water Polo Club was crowned Swim England U15s boys national age group champions after they won all three of their group matches at Sunderland Aquatic Centre, earlier this month.

They defeated Birmingham, Caledonia and Bridgefield to set up a semi-final clash against Cheltenham.

The tournament was the first time in several years that the club has also been able to enter a U15s girls' team in the same competition.

A spokesperson for the club said: "The girls thoroughly enjoyed the challenges of the day and played well together. Although they weren’t in a position to win any medals, the girls have learnt a lot from the day and are already looking forward to working together in order to enter next year’s competition."

Members are looking for players eager to learn and interested in the sport to come along to one of their trial days.

The club is going from strength to strength and commended Maygreen Marketing and The Springfield Centre for their help and support, along with the Great Aycliffe and Middridge Partnership (GAMP).

Sedgefield Water Polo Club offer free trials on most Saturdays from 4pm to 5.30pm at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre – these should be booked in advance.

Anyone interested in taking up water polo is asked to call or text the club on 07579- 030598, or contact sedgefieldwp@hotmail.com
