A BOY who smashed a one mile swimming challenge in the spring was back in the pool last week to hit another target.

In April, Jacob Hutchinson raised hundreds of pounds for the Children's Heart Unit Fund at Newcastle's Freeman Hospital with a sponsored swim. He set out to cover one mile in 64 lengths, but managed 80.

Spennymoor boy, eight, smashes sponsored swim target for heart charity

During the school holidays, the eight-year-old from Spennymoor was back at Sandhill Sports Centre, in Sunderland, where he has lessons, to swim two miles. Cheered on by mam Helen Pennington, dad Jason Hutchinson, younger brother Caleb and nanna Anne Pennington, the eight-year-old covered the distance– 128 lengths– in two hours and 33 minutes.

Miss Pennington said: "As soon as he finished the mile he wanted to do two, he just wanted to do it for himself.

"He found it hard and at about 30 lengths I could see him getting tired but got his second wind and we cheering him on, telling him to keep going and he was so happy to do it.

"He said it was no big deal because it wasn't for charity but how many eight-year-olds have swam two miles? We were so emotional and excited for him, we're really proud."
