A DRAMA group has received a prestigious award following their production of Oliver.

In February of this year, Spennymoor Youth Theatre Group attended their last rehearsal before presenting their latest show, the musical Oliver at Spennymoor Town Hall.

Little did the team know that the representatives of the National Operatic and Drama Association (NODA) who also attended to review the show, were so impressed that the group was nominated to be considered for an award.

This group attended the Annual NODA North Performance Awards Ceremony in the Grand Hotel Gosforth Park on Saturday, September 14.

Spennymoor Youth Theatre Group won the Best Youth Production of 2019 category.

The announcer said: "Each of the around fifty children and young people involved displayed enthusiasm and dedication from the opening number through to the finale."

An overwhelmed Louise Defty, who is chair of the committee and who produced the show, and George Morgan-Watson who played the part of Fagin were chosen to receive the Certificate and plaque from Peter Oliver, currently Regional Councillor for NODA North District 4 and Gordon Richardson who is soon to take on the role of NODA national president.

The group's next performance, Seussical the Musical, will take place at Spennymoor Town Hall in February 2020.
