RUNNERS of all ages and abilities are invited to take part in an annual running event this weekend.

The Christine Brass Memorial run– which includes a 5k route and a 1.2k fun run– will be held at Stainton near Barnard Castle on Sunday.

The event was launched in 2015 by Stainton Village Hall Committee to boost the venue's coffers following the loss of local authority funding.

For the third time it will be held in memory of resident Mrs Brass, who passed away in 2016, who was a keen runner and passionate about the community and its village hall.

She and husband Barry supported the event and Mr Brass will be part of it again this year, when it is sponsored by GSK.

People can sign up and collect race numbers from Stainton Village Hall between 9am and 10am, before the 1.2k starts at 10.30am and the 5k starts at 11am. It costs £10 to enter the 5k and £4 for the 1.2k and all finished get a breakfast sandwich in the hall and sponsors McColl's Brewery will serve beer to adult finishers. Farmer Dennis Hinchliffe allows the event to be held on his land so the entire route is offroad and Teesdale Event and Site Services support the event.

Committee member Amanda Pettitt said: "It is a lovely, community event.

"Last year we had 110 overall between the two races and this year we have more entries online for the 5k. People can also come on the day.

"There is always a lovely atmosphere and it helps with the costs of running the hall which Christine was very involved with."
