RESIDENTS are being encouraged to take part in a community opera with an internationally acclaimed company.

Northern Heartlands is offering anyone living in south and west Durham area the chance to find out more about getting involved in an exciting community production.

A ‘Come & Sing!’ event will take place at Greenfield School, Shildon Campus on Saturday, September 28.

During the day, people will have the chance to find out more about the story behind the new opera, the music being written and the different ways to get involved in the production – as well as having a chance to sing some of the songs created by Durham-born composer Will Todd.

There will also be the opportunity to make suggestions for a title for the finished opera.

Thanks to National Lottery players, Northern Heartlands has commissioned Opera North to create the work and Opera North has pulled together an acclaimed professional creative team.

Northern Heartlands’ director Jill Cole said: “It has been a huge privilege for us to work with Opera North and I’m so pleased at the way the world-class professionals we are working with have really got to grips with what makes people tick here in County Durham."

Anyone wishing to take part will need to have attended at least one of the Northern Heartlands opera events held this year, and the deadline to sign up to be involved is Saturday, November 2, when a second ‘Come & Sing!’ event will be held.

Attendance is free but places must be booked in advance for Saturday, September 28, by visiting and searching for Northern Heartlands Community Opera, emailing or calling 01833-200220.
