MORE than 200 adults with learning disabilities came together for an Olympic-inspired sports day despite the rain.

An annual sports day saw disabled competitors compete undercover, at Sunnydale Leisure Centre, in Shildon, due to weather conditions.

The event was organised by Innovations, a service provider, which aims to enable people with learning disabilities to achieve a more independent and worthwhile quality of life.

Event organiser, Jennifer Howe, wanted the event to be a day to promote friendship and fitness.

She said: "It was a lovely day despite the rain which saw people come together and meet old friends and socialise.

"Due to the rain we had to mimic the sports instead of actually doing them but everyone really enjoyed it and it was followed by a fun disco.

"The sports event is a big celebration of the work we do and the friendships formed. It has been going for years and we hope to continue it for years to come."
