A MAYOR of a County Durham town celebrates her 50th wedding anniversary.

Elizabeth and Alan Bruce, 71 and 75 respectively, who live in Chilton have been married since 1969.

Alan is originally from Counden and Elizabeth from Toronto near Bishop Auckland.

They met at a friends birthday party, they have two girls Patricia and Suzanne.

They were married on the on August 2 1969 in St John's church Hunwick.

Elizabeth worked in Marks and Spencer in Bishop Auckland for 29 years and Alan as a painter and decorator, and security for the council as well as being a school governor.

Both have had stints as the towns mayor Alan in 2001 and 2009 and Elizabeth for five years consecutively between 2012-2017. She said it has been an honour and a privilege to serve the people of Chilton, her most memorable moment meeting cannon John Bell a senior chaplain of Durham at the local church in Chilton.

The couple both said 'Live life to the full when you are young and enjoy every bit of it.'

They celebrated their anniversary by returning to the place of their honeymoon in Blackpool, having tea at the Imperial hotel and having an part of an old tram to themselves.

For their celebrations at home they were joined by the deputy mayor, who was filling in for Elizabeth who would usually do the visiting.
