FOUR parks green spaces in a County Durham town have been recognised amongst the best in the world by the Green Flag Award scheme.

The Surtees Doorstep Green, Duncombe Cemetery, Mainsforth Sport Complex and the King George V playing field in Ferryhill were chosen with a recording breaking 1,970 other UK parks and 131 in other countries.

The award, which is in its third decade, is given to the green space that achieves the highest possible environmental standards, is well maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.

Each of the parks have recently had investments from new nature trails to new play equipment and rubbish bins. The parks are also home to many recreational activities such as Ferryhill Wheelers Cycling Club, and Ferryhill Celtic FC

Councillor Joe Makepeace, Town Mayor of Ferryhill said: “The Town Council is absolutely delighted to receive Green Flag Awards for four of its facilities. Quality green spaces matter to both residents and visitors alike, and this award celebrates the dedication that goes into maintaining these sites to such a high standard. I would like to congratulations all of the Town Council’s staff for a job very well done.”

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “It’s fantastic that we have more Green Flag Awards in the UK than ever before, joined this year by 131 International winners.”
