YOUNGSTERS from a town were given the chance to express their artistic side thanks to a drawing competition led by a cupcake cafe.

The Auckland Cupcake Company in Bishop Auckland invited children from St Anne's CE Primary School, Cockton Hill Junior School, St Wilfrid's R C Primary School and Etherley Lane Primary School for a chance to have their butterfly drawings featured on the cafe's cupcake fairy kitchen wall.

The wall was painted by renowned artist Dan Walls, who later added the butterflies based on the children's designs.

The Auckland Cupcake Company is ran by husband and wife team Joanne and Wayne Furnell.

Mrs Furnell said: "We were so impressed by the children's entries it was hard to choose a winner.

"We came up with the competition because we thought the design needed something else and thought it was a great way to get the schoolchildren involved."

The business owners selected four winners and two runners up from about a dozen entries.

The Auckland Project has staged an exhibition of all the butterfly entries at the community wall at No.42 in Bishop Auckland market place, where they can be seen from 10am to 5pm, on Wednesdays to Saturdays.

No.42 is a shop and gallery space, run by The Auckland Project. It supports small creative businesses and artists.
